PBS' Antiques Roadshow

One long-running series that many overlook is a truly un-scripted reality series named Antiques Roadshow. One of the best, if not the best of British imports, it began in the UK as a 1977 BBC documentary showcasing a London auction house visiting various towns.

Local residents brought their treasures to be evaluated and the audience was also treated to an in-depth historical background to the item. And so the show concept was born.

In the US, this format was adopted by PBS in 1997 and it is Boston's WGBH that produces it. The American version has been hosted by Chris Jussel (1997–2000), Dan Elias (2001–2003), Lara Spencer (2004–2005), and Mark L. Walberg (2006–present). This is a gem of a show and one that will make you head to your attic or basement!

An offshoot was introduced in 2005, Antiques Roadshow FYI. This weekly half-hour show, hosted by Lara Spencer, gives extra information and background on items shown on previous episodes of Antiques Roadshow.
