Virginia Mayo Star of White Heat

I was saddened to learn that actress Virginia Mayo died January 17, 2005. When I think of Mayo, I smile at the memory of her in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" starring Danny Kaye. Her other movie credits with Kaye include "A Song is Born, The Kid From Brooklyn, and "Up in Arms".

Virginia Mayo appeared in two light comedy movies with Ronald Reagan, "She's Working Through College" and The Girl From Jones Beach. She was also in "The Flame and the Arrow" with Burt Lancaster and "Captain Horatio Hornblower" with Gregory Peck. She also appeared in a 1948 movie with a very 'today'title
"Smart Girls Don't Talk".

Mayo made her mark in noir when she was cast as James Cagney's wife Verna, in the 1949 black and white movie "White Heat". She was brilliant as the complaining, sharp tongued, unscrupulous wife to Cagney's Cody Jarrett, a psychotic gangster with a mother complex.

Virginia Mayo died in a nursing home in California at age 84.
