Curriculum Guidelines for Art & Music

Here are the guidelines for curriculum for children in grades one through five. These are guidelines for Art and Music. Starting with grade one, each of the grades will buid on the base of the previous grade's skills. Keep in mind that these are guidelines for skills that should be mastered by the end of each grade. There is always leeway and flexibility. Check with your homeschool evaluator for guidance and suggestions.

Art-
Grade 1- conceptual learning of color, line, shape, texture, form,
pattern, and repetition
Grade 2- add use and understanding of balance, contrast and meaning behind art.
Grade 3- add understanding that Art is a powerful mode of communication, providing essential ways to discover, interpret, and make meaning of life experiences; Also plays a dynamic role in society by making connections to the past and to other cultures.
In addition, student ca demonstrate space, balance and meaning to artwork.
Grade 4- Learn about famous artists, as well as a variety of techniques and design elements.
Grade 5- Show appreciation for Art through interpretation, critique. Also, create Art with emphasis.

Music-

Grade 1-
1. Improvise using musical instruments to songs, recorded selections, stories, and poems. Also, invent and use symbols to represent musical ideas.
2. Participate in various songs alone and in a group.
3. Grasp beat, rhythm. Play simple melodies on instruments.
4. Listen to and describe musical contrasts (high/low, loud/soft).
5. Respond through movement to express what they hear and feel in music representing various styles
and genres.

Grade 2-
1. Understand that music, while a distinct art form, shares many principles and concepts with theatre, the visual arts, and dance.
2. Identify orchestral instruments by sight and sound.
3. Identify cultural influences on music and the Arts.
4. Learn simple musical symbols.

Grade 3-
1. Sing a varied repertoire of songs, including two part
rounds.
2. Play simple melodies and accompaniments on chosen instrument.
3. Perform simple folk dances following the musical cues.
4. Demonstrate awareness of meter by conducting
in a meter of two, and identify meter in written musical examples.

Grade 4-
1. Sing a varied repertoire, including three-part rounds, with an expanded range and perform simple rhythmic and melodic patterns
2. Identify characteristics of music related to historical style and culture.
3. Participate in Chorus.

Grade 5-
1. Be able to create music, perform music, and respond to music.
2. Able to participate in learning an instrument.
