Blogs are a great way to share information with people from throughout the world and to meet like minded people with a common interest.
Within the world of crochet, blogs are increasingly popular, presenting the opportunity to share information about work in progress, finished projects, thoughts on patterns and designs etc. They can also be a great way to publish your own designs and share these with other crocheters.
If you dont already keep a Blog they are easy to do and using a system such as blogger.com or wordpress.com are completely cost free! The only expenditure required is your time and energy in keeping it up to date, fresh and entertaining. There is an excellent series of articles written by BellaOnline editor Diane Cipollo which can be found here and will take you through step by step the process of setting up your first Blog. Once your Blog is set up then you are ready to start Blogging!
There are some key features to consider when setting up and keeping your Blog:
Keep it on topic!
When people are searching and reading Crochet Blogs they do want them to be on the subject of crochet. However they also want to get to know you as a person. Therefore it is important to balance giving crochet information with general chit-chat. Too much non-relevant information will dilute the crochet focus of your Blog. This isnt a problem it just might reduce your crochet readership making your Blog more general than crochet specific.
Make it easy to find you!
In order to become a part of the Crochet Blogging community it is important that people can find you! Of course you can join web-rings such as the one run by YarnTomato which is dedicated to Crochet Blogs and presents a great way to promote your Blog to other crocheters. It is also important that you use key words such as crochet', yarn etc to allow search engines to find your Blog. Make sure you use the term Crochet in your headings. Remember to syndicate your Blog with site feeds and you will find a very interesting article by Diane Cipollo about this here
Enable comments on your Blog to enable people to leave a message or comment when they have visited you. This will help you build a community around your Blog and build traffic.
Remember that anything you write will become in the public domain, so if you let off steam online you have put this in writing for the world to see! Be careful not to offend or even worse to set yourself up for a accusation of libel. Importantly dont forget copyright issues. Do not publish patterns on your Blog unless you have written them yourself or have the written permission of the copyright holder and ensure that your readers know not to publish any information which may be protected by copyright. This is a very hot topic at the moment and it is up to all Blog holders to help police this. You may find it useful to put a statement onto your Blog stating what your position is regarding copyright. If you are publishing your own patterns or designs then consider on what basis you are publishing can people make the item for their own use, can they make and sell them etc. Look at a licensing organization such as Creative Commons for more information about licensing your patterns or designs for third party use.
Well a few pennies anyway! When your Blog is established you could participate in programmes such as the Amazon.com associate programme and sell books and related items through your Blog.
