With the 2012 election near now is a perfect time to teach your homeschooler about the election process. There are many wonderful resources to use. Here is a list of age appropriate books to use as read alouds, independent reading and discussion or for a civics lesson tie in.

Grades K-2

1. Vote! by Eileen Christelow is a comic book style story that will appeal to your youngest elementary students. Using animals and simple explanations this is a book that you can read aloud and discuss.

2. So You Want to be President? by Judith St. George is a great book for all elementary students, and the younger crowd will appreciate this best as a read aloud. This interesting book is filled with exciting information about many of our past presidents.

3. What Are Elections? (First Guide to Government)by Nancy Harris is a basic and comprehensive book that will capture your younger child's attention. Children learn about leaders in local government and what it takes to run a city as well. Tie in a field trip to your local mayor's office and this is a perfect mini unit study.

Grades 3-5

Karen Baicker is a fun and fact filled resource that will involve your upper elementary student in the learning process.

2. The U.S. Constitution and You by Syl Sobel J.D. has a unique focus on the constitution, and how important it is in regard to the electoral process. The branches of government are detailed in a way that kids understand and are excited to learn more about.

3. Candidates, Campaigns & Elections: Projects * Activities * Literature Links [Paperback] by Linda Scher and Mary Johnson is an up to date resource that offers an endless supply of activities, ideas and information for the 2012 election.

Grades 6-8

1. Voting (True Books: Civics)by Sarah E. De Capua offers a clear and fascinating explanation of the election process. A glossary, index and internet resource links make this book a must have for your middle school curriculum.

2. Presidential Elections (Cornerstones of Freedom Series)by Miles Harvey is an easier independent read for your sixth or seventh grade homeschooler. Topics like the primaries, campaign funding and conventions are detailed in an intriguing way.

3. The Importance of the Electoral College by George Grant is a wonderful and detailed description of how we as Americans really elect our president. You will even learn something!

High School-Faith of Our Founding Fathers by Tim LaHaye
