Art & Entertainment:'Dancing With the Stars'

With the reality TV hit, "Dancing with the Stars," and the recent movie, "Letís Dance," with Jennifer Lopez and Richard Gere, is ballroom dancing making a comeback?

We're all anxiously anticipating the comeback of "Dancing with the Stars" in January 2006!

I watched the episode of "Dancing with the Stars" last summer, when Rachel Hunter and her partner were eliminated from the four remaining couples. There was a tearful Rachel who always wanted to be a professional dancer from childhood. Sorry Rachel, you were a supermodel and married to a British rock star (Rod Stewart). Those are the dreams and aspirations of many young girls. Count your blessings. Two out of three isnít bad!

What a great idea having a celebrity coupled with a professional dancer. Some of us (me included) know firsthand the difficulty with learning dance steps. I struggled with Arthur Murray introductory dance classes years ago. To this day, I donít remember the steps, but at least I tried.

I saw the original Japanese version of "Letís Dance." It is cute and quirky, humorous and endearing. I found it to be extremely enjoyable, even with subtitles.

To introduce you to the wonderful world of art, Iíd like to mention an Impressionist artist who is well known for his sketches of ballet dancers, Edgar Degas. He used chalk mostly in vivid, striking colors to capture the moment when a dancer was "in position" or just resting. Trust me when I say you donít need to interpret his work. Just imagine you are the one observing a dance class as an outsider, and Degas was the one interpreting the scene for all to enjoy!
