St. Bart's Breakdown Review

Music journalist Mick Sever has been assigned to interview well-known, reclusive music producer Danny Murtz. For a number of years, Murtz was one of the most prolific, powerful producers on the music scene. Sever reluctantly travels to St. Bart's to interview Murtz at his secluded hillside villa expecting to be home within a couple of days.

From the moment he receives the assignment, Sever seems to attract a disturbing number of near-fatal accidents - one before he even leaves Chicago. Thinking his hometown incident was just a coincidence, he proceeds with his assignment.

In the meantime, Danny Murtz continues his downhill slide into booze, drugs, and abusive behavior to all around him. He has killed several people, but so far has not been caught thanks to his attorney and cleaner-upper Harvey Schwartz. He is also attended by Nancy, his long-time secretary and assistant.

While Sever attempts to obtain a quality interview with the elusive Murtz, the attempts on Mick's life escalate. In the meantime, readers not only follow Severs movements, but are also privy to the actions of others including an unknown woman living in a nearby villa who is keeping an eye on Murtz, a mysterious next door neighbor who makes frequent use of his binoculars as he also follows the goings on at Murtz’s villa, and the conversations and interactions between Murtz and his handlers.

As more deaths occur, Sever is often reminded that there are no murders on St. Bart's – after all, it’s bad for tourism. Can Sever convince the police that there is a killer that must be stopped or will he end up the next victim before he can identify and stop the real killer?

Author Don Bruns has written a successful series of music murder mysteries starring entertainment journalist Mick Sever. St. Bart’s Breakdown is a fast-paced thriller with more than one twisted character, multiple deaths and threats of death, and an increasingly deranged killer still on the loose.

Fans of Don Bruns will feel the comfortable flow of the story as they welcome this edition to the Mick Sever series. This is the second Mick Sever novel I’ve read, and it feels like a comfortable next installment about someone who I’ve come to know through the pages of the novels.

Bruns welcomes the reader into the storyline and lets them see with an eagle-eye view what is happening around Mick Sever and his friends while also feeling like they are at the restaurant table or in his hotel room as he works through the challenges of his assignment.

The dialogue comes away sounding natural and the action sometimes feels a little like a James Bond novel with the several attempts on Mick’s life taking place on winding, twisting roads. The discerning reader can almost picture a movie crew filming the scenes for an action film.

A special thank you goes to Oceanview Publishing for a complimentary copy of St. Bart’s Breakdown. If you are interested in reading any of Don Bruns novels, you will find them at Amazon.com.
