Kannazuki no Miko

Kannazuki no Miko is an anime series based on a manga series by Kaishaku. This series combines lesbianism, along with elements of magical girl and mecha anime, to tell a rather unusual story.

The two main characters of Kannazuki no Miko are Himekio Kurusugawa and Chikane Himemiya. They are high school students attending a prestigious school called the Ototachibana Academy, and it turns out that they are the reincarnations of the Solar and Lunar priestesses. Himekio is a shy 16-year-old, and is the reincarnation of the Solar priestess. Chikane, on the other hand, is a commanding girl with a noble and elegant aura. She is the reincarnation of the Lunar priestess, who has combat skills that resemble those taught to brides of samurai. Chikane also happens to be in love with Himekio.

The first of October is both Himekio and Chikane's birthday, and is also the beginning of "the godless month." This date falls during the first episode of the series, and an ancient evil arises. This evil is an Orochi, a god that wishes to destroy humanity and create a new realm. Orochi has eight necks, which are its eight worshippers and followers (who are also called Orochi).

When the Orochi arrives, the girls' dormant personas are awakened in order to defend the world against this evil. The first Orochi to attack them is Soma Ogami, a boy from the girls' school that is in love with Himekio. After blinding lights bring him to his senses, Soma rejects his fate and vows to defend Himekio.

Himekio finds herself being pursued by both Soma and Chikane. She begins to date Soma, but ends up moving in with Chikane after the school's dorms are destroyed. Not only must Himekio fight against the Orochi, but she also finds that she must make a choice between Soma and Chikane.

Kannazuki no Miko starts out as a typical high school anime (except for the fact that lesbianism is involved), but by the end of the first episode, giant robots and mystical elements appear. Personally, this sudden change in tone in the first episode left me a bit confused by the time I finished watching it. If you don't mind a mixture of high school, magical girl, mecha, and lesbianism, then perhaps Kannazuki no Miko is for you. Personally, I would recommend this series to anime viewers who are 15 or 16 years of age and older.
