Maritime Museum

Hong Kong has a new museum. The Hong Kong Maritime Museum opened September 8, 2005. It is adjacent the Stanley Plaza on Hong Kong Island. The museum is on the ground floor of the historic Murray House. It is easy to reach by MTR and bus.

The Maritime Museum devotes itself to the history of shipping on the South China coast. See exhibits showing what role China, Asia and the West play in the area.

There are 500 different exhibits in two galleries. There is the Ancient Gallery which explores the early boats, trade and exploration. The Modern Gallery explores boats, ships, maritime exploration, trade and naval warfare.

In addition to the galleries, there is a museum shop. It has books, replicas, and souvenirs. There are educational services available for students.

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Saturday’s hours are 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. It is closed Monday and Sunday.

The MTR and Bus service Stanley Plaza. Use your Octopus Travel Card to travel there. This card may be purchased at any HKTB center.
