Never Been Kissed (directed by Raja Gosnell) is a cute romantic comedy that everyone can relate to. Let’s face it. All of us experienced at least one mortifying moment as a teenager.
Josie Geller (Drew Barrymore) is a copy-editor for the Chicago Sun-Times. She gets her big break as budding reporter when she’s asked to go undercover at a local high school. But she’s also forced to relive the embarrassing moments she experienced as a teenager. She soon develops a crush on the cute English teacher (Michael Vartan) and learns what it truly means to be popular and well liked.
I really love the message in this movie. Josie learns that being popular is certainly not the most important thing in the world. It’s more important to be kind to others and to treat them with respect. Something that another character in the movie says all along. As long as you have friends and you’re happy, then it doesn’t matter if you’re the queen bee.
Barrymore does her character Josie justice. She approaches her with a nerdy gentleness. Not to mention the awkwardness and dorkiness she displays is incredibly endearing. It makes Josie more relatable. She’s not perfect and neither is anyone else. I like that by the end of the movie she’s finally comfortable in her own skin.
I can’t forget Vartan as the loveable and sweet English teacher. I was rooting for him and a certain someone the entire time. He’s very authentic and definitely one of the reasons to watch this movie. I can’t get enough of him! If only he could have taught at my high school…
A lot of the humor comes from either Josie’s dorkiness (running into things and falling galore) and the way she handles assimilating back into high school life. But Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly also bring some comedy to the table. They both work with Josie at the Chicago Sun Times (Reilly is her boss). Shannon once again plays crazy well but also gets a few soft moments with Reilly. Reilly’s character is gruff and mean but accepts love in the end.
