Headaches caused by a stressful situation or event can typically be prevented by following a few easy tips for avoiding stress and tension in the first place. It may sound easier said than done, but these stress-reducing tips could be your keys to preventing stress headaches.
Time Management
Planning ahead for just about any situation will reduce the amount of related stress you experience. Think through the entire job or project and make a list of tasks you will need to complete. Put them in the order they will need to be completed and begin to think about how long each task will take. Then, make sure you allow yourself plenty of time to complete all of the tasks before the final deadline. Managing your time well will allow you to get things done without the stress of unanticipated changes, procrastination, and looming deadlines.
Prioritization
Just as it is important to plan ahead, prioritizing your “to do” list will allow you to pace yourself and accomplish goals without added stress. Multi-tasking is a skill that can often come in handy. But, trying to do too many things at once can also be a major stress event. Start by making a list of each task to be completed, include everything from doing the dishes to returning phone calls. Then organize tasks by priority, putting those that “must” be completed at the top and those that you “would like” to complete at the bottom. Start at the top focusing on the essential tasks first. A sense of accomplishment will replace stress as you successfully check off each completed job knowing that your priorities are straight.
Coping Skills
One of the simplest things you can do to avoid stress headaches, is to remove yourself from the stressful situation or avoid it at all costs. Of course, this isn’t always practical or possible. When you can’t avoid a stressful situation, knowing how to cope with the stress will help you prevent headaches as a result. A coping skill is anything that works for you to deal with a situation and reduce the amount of stress you experience. Some examples of effective coping techniques are talking with a spouse or trusted friend to “vent” your feelings, journaling to express private thoughts and relieve frustration without causing conflict, or taking several deep breaths and focusing on a “happy” or serene place to reduce tension.
Eat, Sleep, and Exercise
Surprisingly, these three things can essential to lowering stress and preventing headaches. A healthy, balanced diet with plenty of fluids will give your body the energy it needs to deal with stressful situations. A good night’s sleep and regular rest will also help keep your head clear and ready to deal with whatever comes your way. Finally, to keep your body in peak condition, try to get the recommended 30-60 minutes of exercise daily. Exercise keeps the body strong and it helps relieve stress and reduce muscle tension, thus helping to prevent headaches.
