Start a Homeschool Newspaper!

Newspapers are a great way to share information and create group connectivity. Consider starting a Homeschool Newspaper with your homeschool group, and tailor it to suit your group and family needs. The newspaper can be printed and given, or emailed to participants, and all children can enjoy participating in the collaboration of the final product. You can be as complicated or simple in the design of the newspaper, offering a few to fifty or more articles each issue. Decide if the publication will be weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, etc. Gather the children who wish to participate together to brainstorm ideas for a newspaper name and mission statement. Below you will find some ideas for columns that homeschoolers can write.
1. Restaurant reviews- fast food, sit down
2. Video Game Reviews- little kid, big kid, boys only, girls only, educational
3. Art- submit drawings
4. Fictional story editor
5. Book reviews, all grades and ages
6. Curriculum reviews (from a students-eye view)
7. Website (kid friendly) reviews
8. TV reviews
9. Movie Reviews
10. Co-op reports
11. Weather
12. Sports
13. Want ads (baby sitting jobs, etc)
14. Technology updates
15. Favorite characters column (ie American Girls, WEBKINZ)
16. Board Games- articles and reviews, hints
17. Pet column- caring for your pet, etc.
18. Cool Cars column (16 and older)
19. Bible Verse and commentary (Bible Editor)
20. Field Trip Editor

Plan meetings monthly, at least, to encourage student communication and brainstorming sessions. Decide the preferred ages for writers, as well as the time commitment. Do you plan to establish a set column writer, or perhaps alternate children? Decide also how you plan to print and/or email this newsworthy product. There are many software products and design editors to accomplish this endeavor without strife. However you choose to begin this writing project with your homeschooler there is sure to be adventure and learning ahead!
