Ely's Aultman Street is the main drag with shops and casinos along with the corner drug store. The street is lined with old storefronts that served the area with hardware, general merchandise and everyday items in days gone by. Now most of the stores are useful for furniture and decorating shopping. A nice local clothing store is housed in the old J.C. Penny's store, community owned when Penney's left the area.

One store stands out in this crowd. Desperation Arts The exterior is not extraordinary; in fact it is so ordinary that you might pass it by. If you are a local artist, this is where the White Pine County residents sell their wares. Other artists are represented, but the local art is what makes a good souvenir of your travels.

Desperation Arts is "The Eastern Nevada Art Gallery" and the locals will tell you all the local treasures are found in this quiet, unassuming storefront. Photography had a large representation when I strolled through the gallery space. Some oils and nice water colors were found also. A wide range of prices will appeal to all shoppers. Much of the art was framed, but unframed pieces were also found. Sculpture, woods, metals and stained glass are also available.

A few local artists are basket weavers; their work was very nicely done. This gallery is not a crafty goods gallery. Every piece represented was quality work. The framing was professional. The gallery keeper was nice and polite, not pushy. Contemporary work is found along side more traditional products.

The Desperation Arts gallery is a must see while taking in the sites of Ely, Nevada.
