Aromatherapy for Headaches

Peppermint, eucalyptus and lavender are among the most popular essential oils used in treating headache pain by form of aromatherapy. The essential oils used in aromatherapy treatments are extracted directly from the plant and are in concentrated form. Let’s take a look at some of the essential oils and their soothing properties:

*Lavender- this oil is the only oil that can be applied directly to the skin without the use of carrier oil. Lavender is great for tension headaches, for best results gently massage the oil directly into your temples.

*Eucalyptus- this essential oil is great for sinus headache relief. Eucalyptus is usually a main ingredient found in nasal sprays and cough drops also.

*Peppermint-also found to be effective for sinus headache pain relief. It provides that wonderful cooling sensation. Not to be used while pregnant or if you have high blood pressure.

*Marjoram- this oil is also a great for sinus headache relief but is most effective when inhaled. Marjoram is also used to provide migraine pain relief. Not to be used while pregnant or if you have high blood pressure.

*Ginger- this oil is great for relief from the nausea that can be associated with migraines.

*Chamomile- great at providing relief for headaches.

The purer the essential oil the better. The oils are very potent so do some research or even talk to a doctor if you have any questions. Now you may be wondering how to use essential oils for aromatherapy headache relief. There are six popular ways:

*Massage- blend 12 drops of the essential oil of your choice with 1 tbsp of unscented massage oil.
*Inhalation- use 3-5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Cover you head with a towel while leaning over the bowl. Breathe in the scent for about 5 minutes.
*Facial- combine 6 drops of essential oil with 1 tbsp face oil base. Massage over the face and neck area.
*Bath- blend 8 drops of the essential oils to 1 tbsp of unscented bath oil.
*Oil burner or diffuser- burn for about 15-20 minutes a few times a day.
*Compress- place a few drops of the desired oils into a cool or warm washrag and place it on the forehead.

Be sure to keep your essential oils stored in a cool, dark place. Also, feel free to enjoy the wonderful scents of essential oils through candles and lotions or even in the dried flower form.
