NCIS - Los Angeles

My husband and I watched the entire season of NCIS for this year (so far). While I was hesitant about this newcomer last year--Given the move of Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J from movies to television-- It has been surprising in its ability to keep my attention. This year has not failed to continue in that nuance. So far we have changed up the cast a with an early exit of Nate, and the joining of two regular cast members, Kensi, and new LAPD liaison / partner Deeks and Tech genius Eric has secured a saucy sidekick by the name of Nell Jones.

So far this year we have already made some serious inroads within character development. Callen has settled into his childhood home after a mysterious encounter at his sister's grave (aka last season's cliffhanger). Nate mysterious and rather abrupt departure has shades of a sweeps rescue to come. The developing partnership and chemistry between Kensi and Deeks has been a blushing flirtation that has potential. We have also been given a look into the life of NCIS Los Angeles most interesting character, Hettie Lang, portrayed by Linda Hunt. This, to me, has been the most fruitful of the plots so far this year. The two part episode gave us a glimpse of the cold-war era spy tactics, where micro-dots and secret lists were all the rage. It also confirmed my long standing opinion that Hettie is a freakin genius! She is old school in a way that makes the new school blush and look away. This also, further revealed the unspoken respect and trust between Hettie and Callen.

What's to come? Well let me dip into my prime time bag and see what we have. I can see the continuation of the cold war tactics of Hettie's past, with the possible build into the season finale. As I stated earlier I can see a rescue of Nate in the middle east for Callen and Sam. This, off the reservation venue, will be have heavy focus on two of the three characters. I can see the plot lines revolving around Sam and Nate. The subtle but poignant references to Sam's time in the seals mixed with Nate's ever pending crisis of conscience in the face of war should make for a dramatic character driven plots. Kensi and Deeks playful and comedic flirtations will come to a head just before the end of the season. I predict with either the return of Kensi's MIA fiance, or Deeks estranged father's departure. Both scenarios will offer an emotional catapult into the realm of more than friends.

Needless to say, NCIS Los Angeles has definitely come into it's own, and while it lacks the luster of a CSI or Law & Order it has likable characters and entertaining plots that spark the imagination. Spun off from long standing shows JAG and NCIS I can see it hanging out for a while and I for one am just fine with that.
