Women's History Month Writing Prompts

The month of March is designated as Women's History Month. This month is a wonderful time to offer writing prompts with this women's history theme. Encourage your upper elementary homeschooler to your high school homeschooler to complete the prompts below. Younger children can write a few paragraphs in their journal, while older students can complete an essay with a bibliography.

1. Which activist for women's rights was born a slave? What work did she do to ensure equality for women? Why was her work so important?

2. Sally Ride, astronaut, was a scientist who also explored space. What fears and challenges do you think she faced as a female astronaut? Was she a good candidate to send into space? Why or why not?

3. Amelia Earhart was an adventurous pilot who dared to explore flight. What do you think really happened to her? What research do you have to back up your theory?

4. Susan B. Anthony was an activist who fought for women's rights, including the right to vote. Why do you think her work was essential to women's freedom today? What would life have been like if she did not fight for women's rights?

5. Write about a woman you admire who is famous in America, or your country of origin. Why do you admire this woman in history? What accomplishments did she make to enhance the lives of others?

6. What issues do you think women today face? What challenges do you think women will need to meet in the upcoming decade?

7. List five women alive today that you think will be influential for future generations. Why did you choose these women? Be specific.

8. What qualities do the famous women in history all have in common? How do they all display these postitive attributes?

9. Do you think a woman will be president in the next decade? Why or why not?

10. Write a report on your favorite woman in history. Be sure to list the reasons why you feel she was so important, and what she did in specific.
