Hurricanes and Other Summertime Libations

The men in my family take personal pride in their frozen Margaritas, but I can’t resist a Hurricane. The Original Pat O’Brien's recipe is too potent for me so I created my own version, called the Tropical Storm.

The Original Pat O’Brien’s Hurricane
Makes 1 tall glass

2 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
1 oz passion-fruit juice
1 oz fresh lime juice

Put everything in a cocktail shaker with cracked ice and shake to chill. Strain into chilled a glass or serve over ice in a hurricane glass.

Variations:
Substitute 2 oz unsweetened pineapple juice for passion-fruit and lime juices.
I use more juice than the recipe calls for.

Sandie Jarrett's Tropical Storm
Makes 20 ounce Hurricane glass

1 oz light rum
1 oz dark rum
2 cups (16 fl oz)tropical fruit punch
1 oz fresh lime juice
Ice Cubes

Fill a hurricane glass about 1/3 with ice cubes (about 8 ice cubes). Add rum and juices; stir to combine.

Cook's Notes
Use Tropical juices, not red (Hawaiian) punch. Look for combinations of citrus, passion-fruit, pineapple.

Virgin Hurricane

4 oz orange juice
4 oz sour mix
1/2 oz passion fruit syrup
a dash of grenadine

Build over plenty of ice in a glass. Stir before drinking. Decorate with a lime or orange slice.
