I’ve received many e-mails from people wondering if the adoption they are pursing could be a scam. My answer is always the same: I’m just a writer, not an adoption professional. But if you have the least bit of inclination that something isn’t right, you need to seek advice from an adoption attorney. He or she has years of experience in adoption law, and can help with anything that “just doesn’t’ seem right."
Before you begin your adoption journey, there are some good resources for you to use. One is the Department of State’s Intercountry Adoption website. I highly recommend you visit this website and look under “Country Info” on the main page of the website. This will show you how many adoptions from a country have occurred each year.
On this website, you can also learn about residency requirements. Residency requirements refer to the amount of time potential adoptive parents must reside in a country prior to bringing their child home.
Nothing pains me more than to receive an e-mail from someone thinking they will adoption from country x, and compete the process in “a relatively quick time frame”…all while not observing the residency requirements outlined by the Department of State. These laws are just that—laws, and in a legal adoption scenario, should be followed as such.
It’s heartbreaking to think there do people that want to take advantage of those simply want to adopt a child into their home. Sadly, that is the reality, and the more knowledge you have, the better you will be to prepare yourself against these scammers.
I’m happy to announce the Adoption site at Bella Online will be starting a new series “Avoiding Adoption Scams.” Each month, I’ll focus on one aspect of adoption scams, both domestically and internationally. We’ll have interviews with adoption professionals and parents who have had experience in this area, and can share their wisdom and advice.
My goal is to get as much information about adoption scams out there as possible. Please fell free top contact me if you'd like to be part of this new series of articles.
