Are Teen Celebrities Role Models?

There are many influences in the world today. With the constant attention that is provided to the media from teenagers, itís no secret that teens receive a kaleidoscope of messages. These messages can be varied. They can be either positive or negative and teen celebrities make up a great part of the Hollywood spectrum. Superstars like Justin Bieber, Taylor Lautner, and Miley Cyrus draw countless numbers of fans every time they make an appearance on the red carpet. But what makes these stars so relevant to modern teens. Why are we drawn to the charm, magnetism, and status of these extraordinary young people?

Teen celebrities are quite aware of their fan base. They are not ignorant of the fact that they can draw millions of young people every time they make an appearance. But do they truly realize the spectrum of their own popularity?

If you were someone who was constantly placed in the spotlight and forced to interact with dozens of people on a daily basis, it is safe to say that it will all eventually take its toll on you. That is what happened to young starlets like Brittany Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and Mary Kate Olsen. Despite all the negative attention these stars gathered in their times of great distress, they were still able to get help and manage to rise from their negative states.

They conquered drug abuse, drunk driving, and other bad decisions by seeking help. Though these types of celebrities eventually faced the consequences of their actions, they became more aware of their influence on young people. The media has had a helping hand in this matter. Each of these celebrities had a breakdown or some type of intense problem that was exposed and exploited by the media. Many of these media outlets gain countless numbers in ratings from exposing the negative side of celebrity life.

If that is the case, then why do so many teens seem to have an obsession with the rich and famous?

People have idolized celebrities since the early days of the silver screen in the twentieth century. Even today, celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson are all remembered by adoring fans all over the world for their tremendous contributions.

Despite the fact that they existed years ago, these iconic stars are still greatly celebrated. It might even be correct to say that teens love stars like Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez because they see a better version of themselves in these stars. When teens look at these celebrities on magazine covers, talk shows, and gossip sites they feel connected to them as if they were people that they have actually met before.

By the time kids are in middle school, they start to look to their peers for a sense of whatís socially acceptable or desirable. By following the lives of these public personas, young people are living their lives through them as if they were actually living in million dollar homes and going to extravagant parties.

They see people their own age living a life that is not afforded to everyone and that is something they enjoy seeing every day.

Even though these teen celebrities are in the spotlight, it is important for teens to know what behavior is appropriate and what behavior is not appropriate. The idea if celebrities are good or bad role models varies from person to person, but it is up to you to decide what celebrity behavior is good and what behavior is bad.

Teens already know that how they present themselves is how the world will see them. Celebrities are human just like us and, sometimes, they make mistakes. Realizing that teen celebrities are just regular people with strengths and weaknesses will carry someone who looks up to these teens very far.

Role models can come from every walk of life- not just from TV and blogs. A good role model is oftentimes someone who isnít famous and who makes teens appreciate who they are.
