Fall Foliage Drives in New York

The fall colors are in full display here in northern New York. I took a drive a few days ago and the leaves are just beautiful. Now's the time go get out and check out New York State's fantastic fall show. Here are a few drives to get you started.

In Lewis County, the annual Fall Foliage Drive-It-Yourself Tour is set for October 7 & 8. There's a downloadable booklet ($3) that offers points of interest, historical sites and businesses. This year's tour covers the southest and western sections of the county and should be an awesome trip. See
Drive for more information.

A route that's scenic any time of the year is Route 17 from Binghamton to Harriman. This road takes you through the Catskills Region and has great views of mountains, rolling hills and of course, lots of foliage!

At the top of the state, Route 12 starting at Alexandria Bay turns into Route 37 and follows the St. Lawrence River. I've made this drive many times, and I never tire of the views of the river, the small towns and small bays and coves. This is part of the 454 mile-long Seaway Trail, which runs from Lake Erie to Rooseveltown, NY. For more on the Seaway Trail, visit: Seaway Trail. The publication The Great Lakes Seaway Trail Guide is also available here.

Another drive that is beautiful anytime is a trip up Whiteface Mountain. On a clear day, views of Vermont, the Adirondack High Peaks and Canada are visible. The highway is open through October 20, admission is $5 per car. For directions and more info see: Whiteface.

Get a free copy of the I LOVE NY Autumn Guide and check out suggested driving itineraries at: I Love NY. There are 11 different drives, one for each region of New York State, and each has a different theme.

So what are you waiting for? Choose your route, grab your camera, and go enjoy the colors!
