Olympic Journal Ideas

Olympic Journal Ideas

Did you decide to have your homeschooler create an Olympic Journal? If you did, here are some wonderful ideas for Olympic themed activities and writing prompts!

1.Research the Winter Olympics on the official website and write a short description of each event.
2.Creative Writing Prompt- If you could participate in a Winter Olympic sport, which sport would you choose to learn to play? Why? Do you think you could win a Gold Medal?
3.Choose a country participating in the Olympics, other then your own country, to research. Find out basic facts, such as population, economics and lifestyles of the people there. Has the country you chose always participated in the Olympics? Have they won any medals?
4.Create a Venn Diagram to compare and contrast the Ancient Olympics to the Winter Olympics 2010.
5.Describe the symbolism of the Olympic Rings. Why are they linked? What do the colors represent?
6.Creative Writing Prompt- You have been tasked to create a new Winter Olympic event. What event did you create? Describe it and draw a picture, too!
7.Create a fact list for the site of the 2010 Games- Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Find out the population of this site, as well as recreational opportunities, lifestyles, schooling options, etc.
8.In a recent article in Eating Well magazine, the Winter Olympic athletes for Team USA revealed their "go-to" foods. Check out the article (link at article's end) and create a typical menu for the athletes. Be sure to focus on not only athlete's favorites, but also foods that pack a nutritional punch!
9.Creative Writing Prompt- What Olympic athlete do you admire most? Why?
10. Visit the official page for the Winter Olympics 2010 (link at end of page) and read about the mascots of the games- Quatchi and Mukmuk. Do you think they are good mascots for the games? Why or why not? Would you use a different mascot? If so, which one?
