Dream big with the MIFF

Many people with big Hollywood dreams leave small towns to live in big cities. After all, that's where all the action is, where the talent resides, and where the magic happens. Or is it?

Now, more than ever, smaller communities have realized the significance art and expression have on its residents, lifestyle, and economy, making it more accessible for those with big dreams to nurture them properly.

That's what happened in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada's sixth largest city, but not really known as the "big city." Those that wanted to "make it big" in Mississauga usually ventured to Toronto or Vancouver, should they desire to remain in Canada.

Last year, two brothers from Mississauga named Matt and Jeff Campagna founded the Mississauga Independent Film Festival (MIFF), embracing low-budget films from novice filmmakers who wanted some exposure. It was such a success, that this year, the Campagna brothers were determined to make the event even bigger and better.

"This year, we have even more of an interest from filmmakers, writers, and the general public. Ontarians have seen the success and the hype from last year and are more excited about this year's MIFF," says Matt Campagna. Filmmakers that don't live in a big city will appreciate the recognition and support for their cinematic art, especially those that are just starting out.

"We've noticed that one of the biggest trends this year is that there are much more relatively unknown filmmakers, those that are so eager to get started and need this stepping stone in their career," says Campagna.

Last week, the MIFF director and team announced the final selection of films that will be screened at the festival, occurring July 8-12. The following is the official list of the films that made the final cut:
