Parrots of Africa

Many of the birds commonly kept as pets all around the world, originate in Africa. Let's take a look at some of the more common ones.

African Grey Parrots are very intelligent birds, known for their amazing talking ability. The two types of African Grey are Congo (CAG) or Timneh (TAG).

Lovebirds can be engaging and entertaining pets. There are 9 Lovebird species (Peach-faced, Masked, Fischer's, Abyssinian, Black-collared, Nyasa, Red-faced, Madagascar, and Black-cheeked) although some are not commonly kept as pets.

African Ringneck Parakeets are one of the larger parakeets. They are normally gentle, but can be quite loud.

Poicephalus or Pois consist of several related species such as Cape Parrot, Jardines Parrot, Brown-headed Parrot, Senegal, Red-bellied Parrot, Meyers and a few more. Some have become popular the last few years due to their wonderful personalities.

Of course, these birds live in different areas of Africa, although several may overlap in their ranges. While watching a camera set up at a waterhole in Africa (Africam), I was lucky enough to see a Brown-headed Parrot one day. This was very exciting to see, and I would love it if a similar camera was set up in an area where African Grey Parrots are found.
