Parrots of South America

Many parrots commonly kept as pets originate in South America. Here are some of the more common ones.

Amazon Parrots vary in size, temperment, colour and noise among the approximate 30 different types. Often referred to as the "hot 3" are the Yellow Naped, the Double Yellow Head and the Blue Fronted.

Macaws the larger ones and the smaller ones are bright, colourful and playful birds who will quickly work their way into your home and heart.

Conures vary in size, temperment, colour and noise to a great extent among the different types. The natural colours can be quite brilliant and make these birds very popular as pets.

Pionus make wonderful pets according to anyone who is owned by one. They are very quiet and although they are not known for their talking ability, many of them will talk which makes them fine as apartment pets.

Parrotlets are tiny birds with very large personalities. If space is limited in your home, this may be the bird for you.

Caiques are small, colourful and playful parrots approximately 9" in height. They are very active birds and need plenty of room both in and outside their cages.

Monk Parakeets or Quakers have proven to be very adaptable birds and as a result are not allowed to be kept as pets in some states. Wild colonies of Quakers exist in several locations in the U.S.

Parakeets are normally thought of as Australian birds, but several species are native to South America, such as the Monk Parakeet (above), the Lineolated or Barred Parakeet, and others that are not normally seen as pets.
