Music Education for your Preschooler

Musical education is essential to your preschooler's creative and cognitive development. Children learn basics of rhythm and beat, as well as language development from early age musical instruction. This instruction can come in the form of piano lessons, music appreciation, fun fingerplays and songs, basic theory instruction, or song and dance. Here is an idea of what topics should be covered for musical instruction, keeping in mind that every program varies, depending on ages, location, etc.

Music Instruction Basics for Preschool Children ages Three and Four:

Three and four year olds will learn to sing familiar songs (like Yankee Doodle) and play musical games. The children will learn basic rhythm via simple instruments (like the drum) as they learn to make music. In reality they will discover a wonderful instrument built right into their bodies, thier voice, which they can use to sing melodies. Children at this age can learn to identify contrasting melodies, like high and low, or loud and soft sounds. They are also able to show much of the music with their bodies. Preschoolers of this age will enjoy being able to step the beat, or even hop, skip, and jog to it. They can also clap, snap, and pat rhythms.

Music Instruction Basics for Preschool Children ages Five and Six:

Children getting ready for Kindergarten will continue to use their voices for singing, chanting, and speaking. Combining music and movement, children will use their bodies for moving, clapping, and instrument playing. An emphasis is also on developing good listening skills, along with recognition of beats and tempo. Classroom and some orchestral instruments are identified for children ages five and six as well, both through music and and visual aids. Some students will begin to recognize upward and downward movement as well as repetitive phrases.

Singing familiar songs with your preschooler is a great way to involve your child in consistent music basics. Grab "The Top 30 Preschool Songs" by Kidzup
for your MP3 player and churn out the catchy tunes for your preschooler daily. You will soon see your child recognizing verses, chants and musical "rests" in the songs, as he or she becomes more familiar with them. The 30 Preschool Songs CD by Twin Sisters Productions is an inexpensive and fun cd to get for an at home or in class musical resource as well. Don't forget about some cool instruments, like the Melissa & Doug Deluxe Beginner Band Set. Above all, have fun exploring the world of music with your preschooler!
