Summer Themed Nursery Rhymes

Enjoy a festive and fun twist on several nursery rhymes! With summer season on it's way, you and your preschooler are sure to enjoy this creative rhyming activity. Encourage your child to draw a picture to go along with each rhyme, and discuss ways that he or she can rewrite classic nursery rhymes, too. Brainstorm summer themed words with your preschooler, and make a list together of these words. Encourage your child to write these words, too.

"Jen and Jim" to the tune of "Jack and Jill"

Jen and Jim went out to swim,
To surf and swim in the waves,
On the waves Jim soared, and lost his board,
And Jen swam over to help him.

"Sam Swim Safely" to the tune of "Jack be Nimble"

Sam swim safely,
Do a trick,
Sam, swim over,
That jellyfish quick!

"Little Mary Moon" to the tune of "Little Miss Muffet"

Little Mary Moon
Sat on a sand dune,
Eating her ice pop in the sun,
Along came a fish,
Who gave her one wish,
And she wished to always have summer fun!

"Three Little Fish" to the tune of "Three Blind Mice"

Three little fish! Three little fish!
See how they swim! See how they swim!
They all swam after the dolphin one day,
Who saw them swim and asked them to play,
Wouldn't you like to see this one day?
Three little fish!

"Susie Sells Surfboards" to the tune of "Sally Sells Seashells"

Susie sells surfboards,
By the seashore,
The surfboards she sells,
Are surely swell.

So if she sells surfboards,
On the seashore
I'm sure she sells
Surfboards well!

"Sun Light, Sun Bright" to the tune of "Star Light, Star Bright"

Sun light
Sun bright
Morning sun
I see with delight
I wish I may
I wish I might
Go out to play
And fly a kite!

The rewritten rhymes above are only a few of the ideas for summer themed nursery rhymes. All rhymes can be adapted to each season, as well as a variety of themes. Hopefully these sunny rhymes will inspire not only you, but also your preschooler, to create new versions of classic rhymes.
