Scramble with a Twist

Our ladies group received information about the Salado Chamber of Commerce and was letting us know how to become part of this Fund Raising Scramble to be held at our Mill Creek Golf Course. Since I was preparing for a large family gathering the previous week to this event I had not heard that any of our ladies were interested in joining the event. It then slipped my mind as the deadline to enter was when I was having a great time with my family.

I had long forgotten about it until the Friday before the big event. I was practicing my pitching and putting when I hear someone calling my name. It turned out to be my neighbor Cathy Permenter who works for the Holiday Inn Express and wanting to know if I could find some lady golfers to play in the Scramble as they only had one team signed up to play. I was sorry to hear that and told her I would play and would make a few phone calls.

At such a late date of trying to create interest in this fund raising Scramble I had to tell her I did not have any luck. She had one other person and herself that would play so it would be a threesome. In these kinds of events if you are short a foursome someone in your group may hit an extra shot for your missing member.

I arrived early the next morning as there was a large breakfast ready for the golfers. I ate my breakfast in the ladies locker room as it was a mad house with men players milling around, registering and visiting. Soon one other friend showed up who was playing with her husbands group. Since my neighbor friend was also in charge of the registration we came to realize our third player did not show up. She made a phone call and found out she was ill so that left just the two of us to play this Scramble.

I assured her that we would just go out and have a good time as now we both could hit an extra shot. I let her know that we did not have any stress on us as we probably would not be in the money anyway. She was a little uptight at first with all the rush and work she had to do to get the Scramble going. For some reason we both relaxed and parred the first three holes. This was very unusual as two of them were difficult and one especially was the number one handicap hole. To both of our surprise when we parred that hole as to reach the green you had to hit over the Salado Creek.

We were sailing along fairly well and on the ninth hole which is a par five they had a special gimmick you had to pay $5.00 each to move your tee off spot. This area was where you had to hit over the Salado Creek again. With our four shots from there only one of hers was in the water. We had a choice of three shots to hit to the green. We did so well that we birdied that hole.

My friend was becoming more relaxed and we continued to play well. We came up on the next nine with another par five hole that if you paid the $5.00 you could move up to the new tee box. This was really amazing as we both hit four good shots to an area were we could go for the green. This was again over the Salado Creek and my first shot went a little wide but near the green. I made a little adjustment and we saw it go for the green. Driving up we saw that my ball was just a two feet from the pin. I sunk the putt and my friend shouted, “That’s an Eagle”. That score sure helped us to a final score of 73 for our 18 hole Scramble.

Not thinking we would be anywhere close as in these kinds of Scrambles you have to be under par. The luncheon was held at the Holiday Inn Express with a Mexican Dinner where announcement of prizes would come later. When the other team score was posted we found out we won by one stroke that was a great surprise. It just goes to show you that playing relaxed is the best way to go. Since this was a profit making deal for the Salado Chamber of Commerce they came out very well. They had lots of support from the community and good prizes offered at the Raffle. Our prize money was excellent as we received $150.00 each since we were a two man team. I told my neighbor that if she was going to work on this event next year to give me a call as I would be willing to help in any way I can. This type of thing can be a lot of fun and a good way to raise money.
