All matter created has natural cycles or rhythms including humans. Our cycles are referred to as Circadian Rhythms because they operate by cycling every twenty-four hours even in the absence of light. The world is filled with cycles. A day cycles in 24 hours, the week cycles in 7 days, the month cycles in approx. 30 days and the seasons cycle every 3 months.
Everything in nature has cycles; the seasons, spring, summer, fall and winter are pretty good examples of this. Our lives cycle from birth to childhood to adulthood and eventually death. There is nothing we can do to eliminate this body clock; it is part of who we were created to be. What we must learn is how to make the most of our lives living within these natural rhythms.
To make the most of our lives we must first recognize that most of us don't live in harmony with our circadian rhythms, technology has made it almost impossible. Our lives become more stressful and erratic because there is no rhythm to guide us. Its not because they don't exist but because we chose to no longer include them in our lives. In return, we have gotten lost in our money driven, consumer spending, fast track society that leaves us dissatisfied, exhausted and depressed.
We were created to function in a structured environment and without that structure our body's health suffers. Chronic disruption of our natural rhythms can cause serious health issues. We are much more likely to get diseases like breast cancer, diabetes, bi-polar issues, chronic fatigue, obesity, irregular heartbeats, either slow or uneven beating or wildly erratic racing heartbeats and auto-immune diseases. It brings on depression and other mental illnesses for reasons we still do not understand. Most importantly it interferes with the body's ability to heal itself.
It's time to slow down and reclaim the rhythm nature has so blessedly provided as an example. So much of what occurs in nature goes unnoticed because we move so fast we don't take the time to see it much less enjoy life. In the past people lived by the seasons, gardening to sustain themselves, planting and harvesting by the moon, going to bed at dusk and rising with the sun. It is a slower rhythm than we are used to but it's also healthier and more natural for our bodies. We must again learn to flow with nature and her cycles, to reconnect with it instead of fight against it.
We can start by growing a garden in tune with the seasons, using the moon cycles and engaging with the earth. Reconnecting with your source of food will help you to re-calibrate your body clock to its natural circadian rhythm. Taking the time to notice what bounty nature has prepared for you by harvesting her wild foods. Eating them will clear your foggy mind and awaken your intuitive sense and instincts. You will feel alive and vital again. It will also build your self-esteem by providing confidence in your own sustainability and relieve the depression that comes from being overwhelmed.
