Inner Meaning
The World card speaks of completion, of everything coming together in fruitation. It represents reaching the goal, completing the journey, the Fool finally reaches the end of the road and is whole and complete, ready for the next cycle. This is the last card of the 21 card Major Arcana. This is the card of dynamic balance, where all is right with the world, all is as it should be. Everything has come together, we are in the right place, doing the right thing, achieving what we have envisioned, and feeling fulfilled and complete. In this sense, the World card also heralds new beginnings that naturally emerge out of the completion cycle.
The World also signifies a happy frame of mind - a time when we feel whole, integrated and satisfied with ourselves and our lives. We seem to understand other people better, we see how everything around us is interconnected and we feel energized and desire to work in collaboration with others on meaningful tasks and projects. The motto for this card according to Mark McElroy is "And they lived happily ever after." This card can also represent a quick win - winning the lottery or a contest, for instance.
The World Card in a Reading
The Upright World card represents the successful ending of a cycle. It could represent a graduation, a marriage, the birth of a child representing the end of a pregnancy, the attainment of a long held dream or aspiration. It means that all of your hard work, devotion, and planning will finally pay off! It signals both abundance as well as spiritual success. Prior restrictions and barriers will dissolve, bringing a new sense of freedom and peace. This card can also signify travel in the near future, especially overseas travel.
The Reversed World card warns that desired change will be delayed and that more time and energy must be devoted to your pet project or life transition before you can experience the promised completion. This may feel very frustrating, but patience and perserverance will pay off in the end. You may feel stifled, even trapped - but don't give up, keep on a steady course for now.
