Country Faith Review

As each year draws to a close, devotionals for the upcoming year commonly surface--some meant for short-term use; others meant for long-term use. Country Faith: Fifty Six Reflections from Today's Leading Country Music Stars is a compilation of the favorite Bible verses of fifty six country musicians. Included at the end is the Gospel of Mark.

Reviewers are supposed to be impartial, yet it is often difficult not to include a degree of subjectivity in the assessment. If I do not like a work, it is sometimes difficult to sit and ponder who may or may not be enamored with the book. Likewise, if I am blown away by an author's work, it can be difficult to withhold boisterous enthusiasm. There is a danger in being too exuberant as well; it is never the intent to mislead an audience.

By its very definition, a devotional is a religious or virtuous reading. No promise or requirement must be made that a devotional will be thought provoking or lead to a deeper examination of one's own faith. Yet, the anticipation is that one will be inspired on the basest level. My assessment of this week's review, Country Faith is mixed. I found the book very charming. It is certainly attractive, and I have a great appreciation that fifty six famous people are not afraid to speak for God and declare themselves Christians. Each page presents a popular country musician's story of why a particular Bible verse holds meaning to him or her. Some are touching; a few seem rushed, trite, or even out of context. In my opinion, the book is not a devotional. It does not strengthen or deepen my faith. Rather, it is a sweet, inspirational work. Including a music cd of some of the musicians singing Christian hymns would have made it a great option for gift giving.

That being said, what target audience would find Country Faith most appealing? My mother loved it; my daughter did not. My recommendation is for someone who is looking for light inspiration, especially if a country music fan.

This book is available from online retailers such as Amazon.com.
