Join Jack and Annie in another Magic Tree House adventure, Afternoon on the Amazon Magic Tree House Book #6 is by Mary Pope Osborne. Once again we find Jack and Annie traveling by magic tree house. This time the eight-year-old Jack and his seven-year-old sister, Annie, are traveling to the Amazon River Valley. Morgan la Fay shared the gift or a magic tree house with Jack and Annie.
However, now a spell is on Morgan le Fay and the kids want to help their generous friend. In order to break the spell they must travel to the Amazon Rain Forest and gather the four items needed to break the spell. A little mouse named Peanut, travels with them in the front pocket of Annie’s shirt.
When they first land they do not realize that they are on the top of the rain forest canopy, and they are actually 150 feet above the forest floor. In order to get to the ground they find huge trees with hanging vines and have to use the vines to descend to the ground.
The groundcover hides all the creepy, crawling creatures. Luckily, Jack has brought with him a book about the Amazon River Valley which they are able to consult for facts and answers. They have many, many questions about where they are now.

introduces children to the rain forests of the Amazon River Valley. The hot, moist climate is overwhelming to Jack and Annie. They encounter army ants, piranhas, crocodiles and jaguars. as a wonderful introduction to the lush, beautiful vegetation, foliage and undergrowth and the many creatures of the Amazon Rain Forest. Because of the destruction being caused by man there is much to learn about what is needed for conservation of the rain forest. Jack and Annie learn that the vegetation and animals are at risk of becoming extinct. This early chapter book flows very smoothly, and keeps the reader interested. Jack and Annie encounter a new plant, animal or situation every three pages.
Jack and Annie find a mango in the Amazon Rain Forest. If you live in an area where you can buy mangos, take your children to the grocery store and buy a mango. Before cutting it take time to feel and smell the mango. Compare the mango’s feel and touch to other fruit to discuss the similarities and differences. Now, cut and eat the mango, then compare the mango’s taste to other fruit. As you share this fruit, remind them that these juicy, tasty mangos grow in the Amazon Rain Forest. Now, they will have this little reminder of one item from the region.
