Susan Atkins was one of the women involved with the Charles Manson family and the infamous Sharon Tate murder along with Leslie Van Houten and Pat Krenwinkle. Susan came from a tough childhood. Her mother died of cancer when she was fourteen and she always felt like she wasn’t as loved as her brothers were by their father. She also says that she was sexually molested by her older brother and his friends. Her brother apparently told her later on that he did it so he that he could teach his friends about sex. Susan also claims that she was molested by her father’s friends also.
When she was eighteen, she went out on her own and moved to San Francisco. She was introduced to marijuana and LSD shortly after that and hopped from bed to bed. The drugs she took made her wild and it is also the reason she got the nickname “Crazy Sadie”. She worked many different jobs to support her drug habit and even worked for Church of Satan founder, Anton Szandor LaVey in theatrical productions as a vampire. It was soon after that, that she met Charles Manson in a living room of a house where she was attending a party. He was playing guitar and she was captivated by the music and by him. It was then she decided to leave everything and everyone behind and follow Manson and some other girls that were with him.
She has been in jail since her conviction in 1971 for her part in the Tate - LaBianca murders that stunned the nation. She has been turned down in numerous parole hearings with her latest in 2005. In 1981, she became a born again Christian and over the years she has trained to be a paralegal in jail, started a twelve step Christianity program which is like the twelve step AA and NA program but it is for the Bible. She is attempting to get her Bachelor’s degree online, which she is paying for herself and in 2005; she was just 4 credits away from graduating. She saved an inmate’s life in prison and was working as a receptionist and worked at helping inmates to prepare themselves for going back into society. She got married to a man named James Whitehouse, who is a lawyer and a Harvard graduate. They are still married today.
Today she has brain cancer and it is terminal. She has been in the infirmary since March of this year, 2008 and it is also reported that one of her legs has been amputated as well. She has asked for a compassion release from prison and has also been given six months to live. The prosecuting attorney, Vincent Bugliosi, has even said that he has no problems with her being released due to the dire health circumstances. As of this writing, it is unknown if she has been released even though she has been given the okay by the prison. As of this date she has also been in prison longer than any other woman in California history.
Should she be released to enjoy a little freedom or should she die in prison for taking part in horrific murders? You Be the Judge!
