Highlighting Makeup

Along with contouring, highlighting your facial features helps to add dimension and emphasize your best features. When applied correctly, it can transform the face. Highlighters can give skin a beautiful glow for both daytime and nighttime looks.

Highlighting Products
Due to the popularity of highlighting and contouring, a wide range of products are available from numerous cosmetics companies, from drug store brands like LíOreal to higher-end brands like MAC.

Youíll find highlighting cosmetics in liquids, creams and powders from department stores, drug stores, cosmetics stores and online. Whether you want a matte highlighter or prefer shimmer, with so many products available, youíre sure to find what youíre looking for.

Using Other Products as Highlighters
What if you donít have a highlighter or you canít afford one? Thereís actually no need to purchase a separate product specifically designed for highlighting. If you donít have one on hand, you can use eyeshadows, blushes, concealer, or just about any other color cosmetic product. For example, one popular product used as a highlighter is MACís Naked Lunch eye shadow.

The key is choosing the right color for your skin tone. No matter what product you use to highlight your features, choose a color that is a little lighter than your natural skin tone. Those with very fair skin may not need a highlighter unless they want to add shimmer to their look.

How to Apply Highlighters
After applying foundation, add some highlights. You may choose to start anywhere on the face. One way to do it is to start by applying a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones or the middle of the forehead just above the eyebrows. Avoid highlighting features you feel are too large. Highlighting these features will only emphasize them, making them appear larger.

Add a highlight down the center of the nose, but donít highlight the tip of the nose unless you feel that your nose is too short and you want it to seem longer. You can also highlight the center of the chin and the area just above the jawline.

When coupled with a contouring product, highlighters can help add more dimension to your face. They can give you a glowing complexion, too.
