As parents we wish for nothing less than the best for our kids. That is understandable. However, insisting that they live out our own dream is both unfair, selfish and usually yields unpleasant results. From where I come from, parents tend to dictate a certain line of discipline or career path for their children, and insist on it too. The kids are forced to do the wish of their parents whether the kids liked it or not. I used to know of a family where the father insisted all his kids became medical doctors. He was obsessed with this dream he had for his children, to the point of using his financial position to push them through the school of medicine. He never listened to what his children had to say, in fact, he would not hear of any other career path that wasnít medicine. His kids followed the process all right, but that was all it was for them, a rigorous process of pursuing a dream that wasnít theirs. Their only goal was to please daddy. The end result was that they didnít turn out to be good doctors, and they rarely practice these days. Such waste of time and resources if you ask me. It is natural for parents to suggest career paths for their kids, but here's what happens when you insist on something that isnít your child's passion.
1. They'll always resent you for it: There are parents who do not want to hear their kids talk about taking up certain career paths because they think it unserious. The chances are that your kid have their own passion and interest. This interest may not be something you welcome, but if it is his dream and you deny him the opportunity to follow through this dream, he'll grow to resent you for it. There's no telling how he may handle this resentment he feels for you.
2. You abort their talent alongside their dream: Most times, talents are tied to those things we are most passionate about. When you refuse your kid to pursue a career in maybe music or teaching, you may be destroying his talent as well as snatching his dreams from him.
3. They will live a life full of regrets: Your kids will go through life with so much regrets for the path they know they should have taken. For each time they see people excelling in the field they'd be deprived of plow on, they get very depressed with sadness.
