Decorating your Home Southwest

Are you looking for a change? Consider redecorating your home in the Southwester style. This style is native to the Southwestern United States but can be portrayed wherever you choose to live. It is a testament to the enduring quality of the style.

Southwestern style is a total package. This is to say that if your home was not built in the traditional adobe or adobe covered with stucco way, don't worry. There are still ideas that can be utilized to exude the Southwestern feel.

Before you decide to paint the outside of your home an azul color blue, consider the accents you can use to signify your style instead. Terra cotta pottery is a part of the Southwestern decor. Strategically place these pots around your porch and walkway. Fill them with flowers that display native southwestern colors: orange, yellow, blue, and red.

A wrought iron bench on the porch brings the Spanish influence that became a part of the Southwestern style. Wrought iron was used to make home accents by blacksmiths. Including these pieces in the design provides another striking element.

What about furniture? Forget the art deco modern and use traditional wood carved furnishings. Carved wood goes back to the roots of furniture making before other metals were available. Couches, futons with wooden frames, chairs, desks, and dining tables in natural wood hues are appropriate.

Choose a neutral color for the cushioning. From here you can add pillows in other Southwestern colors as an accent. Neutral colors can be changed to another vibrant shade with the addition of a slipcover. It is that easy to adjust the color scheme in most rooms.

Each room can be of a neutral color for the walls or another brighter alternative. It is worth noting that with neutral hues, there is more versatility in creating a mood. All of the colors are complementary, but the wall color has a particular effect on the room. Opt instead for wall hangings in different patterns and colors. The traditional patterns are lined and diamond or round shapes mixed within.

Native artwork and pottery bring authenticity to each room of the home. These items can be found at shops in the Southwest and bought online from collectors and Southwestern-based dealers. Do your homework. Choose accents that are created in the traditional style. Don't substitute other metals for wrought iron furnishings or Southwestern-style rugs, table coverings, and wall hangings in non-traditional colorings.

Start one room at a time and work your way around the house. It is a labor of love and one that takes focus and most of all, fun. You'll be amazed at how different the attitude of your home becomes after the Southwestern redecorating is complete.
