I love the Moscow Mule! I discovered this delightful drink about a year ago at a seafood restaurant where it was the perfect accompaniment to my lump crabmeat cocktail! I also love any drink with an affectation so the fact that it came in a cup copper mug really tickled my fancy!
I'm not completely sure why the copper mug which was aptly engraved "Moscow Mule" with a darling little kicking mule engraved on it, but I know that it does have something to do with the original marketing of the drink! What I will say is that I love the taste of icy cold alcohol in a metal container (think Mint Juleps!), the metallic tinge really does something for the drink, rendering it crisper, cleaner and colder!
This is a wonderful cocktail to enjoy around the holidays, the ginger is the perfect antidote for all of the heavy food that we enjoy all season long and it's a bit different and very festive! The original recipe calls for just ginger beer, but I love to add some freshly grated ginger to mine! Use an organic ginger Beer, not ginger ale and the flavor will be much better! This drink goes very well with chilled seafood cocktails of any sort, think salmon gravlax and pumpernickel with fresh butter, fresh raw oysters with mignonette sauce or chilled lobster and fresh crab.
You will need:
1 and a half ounces of Vodka - I like to use Ketel One
3 ounces of Organic Ginger Beer
1/2 teaspoon of freshly grated ginger root
1 Tablespoon of simple sugar syrup
1/4 ounce of fresh lime juice
2 sprigs of fresh mint
1 wedge of fresh lime
A copper mug if possible , even a pewter mug will do in a pinch. Otherwise this can definitely be enjoyed in "just" a glass!
This is simple recipe! Muddle one of the sprigs of mint in the bottom of the glass and add ice! Next, add the vodka. Then add the ginger beer, syrup, lime juice and grated ginger. Stir briskly and garnish with the fresh mint and lime.
That's it, all there is to it, except of course to enjoy it!
