When finished the little heart can have lots of applications, make it as a patch to sew onto jeans or jackets, make a big woolly one like the one in the picture (worked in double knitting mohair) and sewn onto a jumper - changing an otherwise boring black jumper into something a little different, worked in cotton and used as a coaster .....!

There are many ways of making crochet hearts - however this is a very easy way which allows the size of the finished heart to be easily varied.

The heart is constructed with an inner chain which is shaped into a 'v'. Rows of single crochet are then worked around the central chain to form the heart. After making the first round, the thread is broken and rejoined at the bottom tip of the heart. The reason for this is to give the same number of rounds on both sides of the heart and to finish at the tip.

Shaping is made each round by crocheting three stitches together at the top of the heart which forms the inner 'v' at the top of the heart, and by increasing two stitches at the bottom tip of the heart. Two stitches are increased at either edge of the heart which form the rest of the shaping.

The heart can be altered in size by adjusting the thread / yarn used - or by altering the number of the initial chains.

Instructions for Crochet Heart


The Crochet heart shown was worked in no 5 Crochet Cotton with a size 4 / 2mm crochet hook. It measures 3 inches from top to bottom and 3 inches across at the widest point.

Make 20 chain

Missing the first chain, make single crochet into the 2nd chain from the hook and the next 8 stitches. Make 3 single crochet into the next chain which is the middle chain stitch. Make a single crochet into each of the remaining chain stitches. You have worked completely along the 'bottom' of the chain.

Make a further 2 single crochet into the last chain ie 3 single crochet have been made into the end chain � this �turns� the work so you are now going to work along the top edge of the chain.

Make a single crochet into the next 7 stitches (you are working into the other side of the chains). Crochet the middle 3 stitches together (ie put hook through next stitch, yarn over hook and draw yarn through stitch and leave loop on hook, repeat twice to give 4 loops on hook in total, draw yarn through loops on the hook). Work 1 single crochet along the rest of the chain, making two single crochet into the last chain. Snip off the thread and draw through stitch to fasten it.

Refasten the yarn onto the bottom tip of the heart and work in rounds, increasing two stitches evenly at both 'bumps' of the heart, increase three stitches into the stitch at the tip of the bottom of the heart and crochet three stitches together at the 'dip' at the top of the heart. Continue working making 6 rounds in total or until the heart measures the required size. Note: If the heart starts to curl you might need to adjust the number of stitch increases.

The heart will benefit from blocking into shape (or gently pressing).
