The Activity #4 Review

The team of Nathan Edmondson and Mitch Gerads are back with color assistant Joseph Frazzetta and letterer Jeff Powell for another fun entry of The Activity. The title of this issue is “What goes up must come Down.” You’ll catch the meaning of that later as Team Omaha takes their high-tech style to Colombia.

Team lead Danny Locke, a.k.a. Weatherman, and company are tasked with bringing in Marco Uribe, also known as “El Jefe,” mid-helicopter flight and without anyone knowing who was involved. Because their mission requires a unique strategy, it calls for some new tech. They acquire a radio-controlled car which they will use to attach a “sink.” This device is used to drain the power of any device to which it is attached.

Edmondson changes the pace from previous issues in various manners. Several panels have the characters exhibiting their more humorous sides. It’s not big and flashy in a “haha” funny fashion, but it just shows the characters’ less business-oriented sides and how they interact with each other when not in the field. This goes along with another instance where readers will see the team preparing prior to the Colombian job.

Another example which distinguishes itself from last month’s more somber mood is the real-time tension where their mission appears to be compromised at two separate moments. One involves the RC car and another involves team member Fiddler as she’s lost in the shuffle. This sequence of panels is done quite well from both the writing and visual standpoints.

Gerads provides more solid work on the pencils. He and Frazzetta give readers a couple different looks surrounding Colombia and while they’re actually there. Before and after the action, there’s a lighter vibe with the team at headquarters and out in the daylight. Their mission takes place at night, so as expected, they use more blacks and blues. There is also some light green used for their scopes. This is shown well on a full page where the team surrounds the target and he’s lit up with green dots from their lasers.

As stated, this is another good issue and I still recommend this series. It’s one of my favorite independent books being published right now. It’s never too late to jump on-board. Be back next issue as the team heads to Taiwan. Thanks for reading.
