A taste of Egyptian Gothic decor

I am very partial to the Gothic and have been for many years. I have a great passion for Gothic, especially Medieval the period. I find myself drawn to the look for this period and I have loved and enjoyed implementing these ideas and décor into my home. While everyone has their own thought of what "Gothic" is and looks like, the subculture does have a number of identifiable sub-types that are frequently found among Goths. Within the Goth Code are many descriptions of these common Gothic types, everything from Antiquity Goth you’re into embellishments, medieval corsetry to Cyber tech Goth wears wires, silicone chips and circuit-boards.

In a similar stratum, I've tried to exhibit some of the interior design styles that might be considered typically "Gothic." This is meant merely as an illustration and perhaps even an encouragement. This is not an absolute directive in any way at all. These are only suggestions. Also, elements of various styles can be combined to greatly effect the Egyptian Gothic imagery has long been a part of the Gothic style.

The Look

Anne Rice surely wasn't the first to link traditional gothic to the intriguing mysteries of Egypt. The ankh has long been a Goth favorite, and the dark tombs of pharaohs somehow seem suited to the gothic temperament.

Ambience
Refined, elegant, regal, and fit for a dark gothic queen or king.

Palette
Regal black and gold, with ivory accents and perhaps a little silver.

Textures
Crisp linen and fine Egyptian cottons abound, possibly coordinated with black velvets, fur, and even animal prints. Wicker and woven reed textures work too.

Musical Background
Dead Can Dance draws from so many ethnic traditions, they seem to fit everywhere. Siouxie and the Banshees also seem appropriate, especially with Ms. Sioux's past dabbling in Egyptian imagery.

You Might See...
Small Egyptian statuary, cartouche patterns on bedding or pillows, framed museum prints of Egyptian artifacts, wicker furniture, lacquer accessories, carved African artwork, things bought at a specialty store. Check your local stores and thrift stores for these treasures.

Whichever gothic look you decide to implement in your personal space, run with it and enjoy your look.
