Growing up, my parents were always working on one home improvement project or another. I remember watching my Dad and Uncle replace our roof, counters, and cabinets, and my Mom was always redecorating - she regularly painted, and made things like curtains and throw pillows.
So I ended up assuming that everyone did these kinds of things, and that they would be easy enough to pick up on when the time came. When my new husband and I bought our first house in 2003, I was in for a rude awakening! While we took on a few small projects in the beginning (and I did plenty of reading and planning,) we found ourselves keeping busy just handling all of the basic tasks that go along with home ownership. (It didn´t help that we both worked 50 hours a week on opposite schedules.) Then we had our two daughters, back-to-back in 2007 & 2008, and life became way too hectic to think about anything besides finding time for a shower and to do an occasional load of laundry.
Now our daughters are 3 and 4, and while they´re still a handful, life is just a little bit easier these days. So in the recent months I´ve started taking on some of the projects that have been on my to-do list for years. So far I´ve done a lot of painting, sewing, and little fix-it jobs, but I look forward to continuing to learn and handling more complex jobs in the future. It´s my hope that the BellaOnline Home Improvement community can become an active, helpful place for us to share ideas and accomplishments and learn together!
On a personal note, I live in Cincinnati with my husband Steve and our girls, along with our old dog and five cats. In addition to Home Improvement projects, my hobbies include reading, running, and playing the ukulele. I was a paralegal for many years but am now a full-time freelance writer. I love writing about Home Improvement, Parenting, and Eco-friendly living - but to pay the bills I also do a great deal of legal and business content writing (which I definitely don´t mind either!) Oh, and I´ve been a vegetarian for almost 10 years and (if you couldn´t tell from the five cats,) I´m a huge animal lover.
