How to Recognize and Combat Teen Bullying

When you or someone you know is being bullied itís important to speak up. If someone else is constantly harassing you or is using language that is hurtful or insensitive it can be both devastating and harmful. If you or someone you know is too afraid to speak up about bullying, here are a few things you can do that will help.

1. Tell someone! An adult like a teacher, your parents, or the school principle are all people you should inform if you or someone else is being bullied. By telling an adult, you are paving the way towards a better life for yourself or someone else. An adult can take the necessary steps towards making sure that a bully suffers the consequences of taking advantage of someone elseís emotions.

2. Face the bully and tell them how you feel! Swallow your fear and take up a badge of courage by standing up to this person. Realize that they are only human just like you. You are meant to have a life that is happy without fear just like they are. We are all equal. By confronting the individual who is taunting you, you are taking a stance against them and their unfair ways. The other person may even respect you for standing up to them, but if they donít itís their problem. At least you have proven to yourself that you can stand up to anyone who is treating someone despicably.

3. Know that a bully teases people because they are insecure about themselves! Bullies are mostly sensitive people treating people insensitively. They just want to be heard. Since they may not have an outlet to let go of their anger and frustrations, they often take out that anger and frustration on someone else. Sometimes, they pick someone who they feel may be more vulnerable than they are. A bully is an insecure person, and they should be pitied. Itís important to know that. Bullies basically bother people who they either secretly admire or are jealous of. People like this should know that to show someone how you feel, you shouldnít do it by punching someone or saying insensitive remarks.

In conclusion, if you or someone you know is being bullied you should tell someone, face the bully head-on, and realize that bullies may be victims themselves who are crying for attention. People are constantly becoming more aware of the issue of bullying. Bullying is a devastating and awful thing that harms people and the ones they love. It should be stopped whenever it is witnessed by someone and it should be stopped IMMEDIATELY.
