There's been more news lately about recalls than any other time in recent or past history. The historic number of cars recalled by Toyota, put the subject on everyone's mind, especially the millions of people around the world driving Toyota's.
There are a few different ways to find out if the vehicle you're driving has been recalled.
First, remember that most recalls are not as important as those where your life may be endangered by driving the vehicle.
Most recalls in fact, are not a safety hazard and that's why the Toyota recalls were such big news.
Also, there isn't any car company that hasn't had recalls. They're actually somewhat common, but again most are not that significant.
With tens of thousands of parts making up one vehicle, it's not surprising that recalls occur. In fact, if not for modern ingenuity and technology, we'd see quite a few more.
Recalls actually begin with you, the automobile driver. If you are experiencing difficulty with your vehicle in any way (other than normal maintenance and wear), you can contact the NHTSA - National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to research and log a complaint.
These complaints are kept in a database and if the number of similar complaints reaches a certain point, the NHTSA will investigate.
They most likely will contact the manufacturer at some point in the process to ask questions and review reports, data, and other information so that they can make an informed decision.
Like a hospital emergency room, the most serious cases are taken first and investigated thoroughly. Those that have potential safety hazards are usually first in line.
The NHTSA makes the decision typically with the manufacturer to recall the vehicle and all buyer's of that particular vehicle must be notified. The manufacturer will notify the vehicle owners and corrective actions are explained.
To fix the problem, you typically make an appointment with an authorized service station and take the car in for service of the problem at no charge.
You can also join the manufacturer's e-mail list and they would send recall information via e-mail if one ever occured on the vehicle you purchased.
