The Hermit

The Hermit is a card with a great deal of symbolism and importance. The Hermit speaks of personal illumination, seeking our answers within, building trust in ourselves and our connection with our higher power. The Hermit is often depicted as a robed figure, standing on a path holding a lantern. The symbolism is quite literally the "lighting of the path" - the way shower.

The Hermit is an elder, which represents wisdom gained through experience, knowledge that is further processed into wisdom. Hermit people are often viewed as wise beyond their years, contemplative people who look beyond the surface to the deeper meaning behind their experiences.

Hermit in a reading speaks of a need to develop a strong sense of self and personal truth. Hermit is alone, but not lonely. He is comfortable and secure in his own identity and has found personal fulfillment. This in turn, allows him to draw people and circumstances to him which are healthy and rewarding.

Hermit often reminds us that happiness and inner peace remain illusive when we expect other people or circumstances to "make" us happy. Happiness is indeed a personal choice that comes from a strong sense of self and purpose in life. Hermit can speak of a need to develop more confidence and a stronger sense of identity. Upright, it can tell us that our goals are in line with our higher truth and that we are proceeding in the right direction.

Reversed, or in any challenge position, the Hermit can be a tough card to face with honesty. He tends to come up reversed when we are proceeding in error - going against our truth. It can point to lack of self-confidence, giving too much power away to others, not trusting our own intuition, and even not learning an important spiritual lesson. This may culminate in a difficult lesson repeating in our lives until we come to terms with the truth behind the situation.

A Hermit, regardless of its positioning speaks of a need for personal wisdom, intuition and empowerment. It also suggests a time where a learning experience is being presented that you can grow from. Any time a Hermit appears, it is a good time for some meditation and solitary reflection before proceeding.
