Community Support for Breast Cancer

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and is a great opportunity for your company to help support a worthy cause and give back to your community. Community support should be an important part of your business plan. Businesses that “give back” are appreciated by customers, and a strong community is essential for business survival. These community support ideas can help your business support breast cancer awareness in your area during the month of October.

1—Fundraising: Sponsor a fundraising event at your business. It can be as simple as having a collection box (make it pink!) for customers and employees to make donations or as elaborate as hosting a big bash. Be creative and enthusiastic about your idea and others will, too. Possibilities are endless!

2—Participate in a walk. There are many breast cancer walks this month. You can sponsor a team from your company (which is a great team-building activity, too). If a team sponsorship is out of your budget, you can walk individually. Individual walk entry fees are usually in the $20 range, and you can raise additional monies and support by encouraging your customers to support your effort.

3—Give a portion of your proceeds. Having a special sale on a particular item is a popular way to give back. Large companies create special breast cancer products and give the proceeds of those sales to charities and organizations involved in fighting breast cancer. You can do something similar, or do something as simple as giving $1 for every product you sell on a specific day.

4—Volunteer. Many events desperately need volunteers. Walks need people for water stations, registrations, handing out t-shirts and more. Other events need help, too. And, organizations need help with organizing, promoting and planning their events. Contact event supporters to see what is needed. Bring your coworkers and make it another team-building day. Invite your customers, too.

4—Promote programs and activities. Use the space on your blogs, websites and social media pages to help spread the word about activities in your area. Write an article about breast cancer awareness. Distribute flyers in your stores.

5—Go Pink! Pink is the color of breast cancer awareness. You could designate one day a week for all your employees to wear pink (take photos & share them). You could use pink shopping bags or tissue paper to wrap your customer’s purchases in. If you have a storefront window, decorate it in pink.

Almost everyone knows someone lost too soon to breast cancer, or someone going through treatment now, or someone who has survived. It is a disease that touches so many lives. While not exclusively a woman’s disease (men die of breast cancer, too), women have been instrumental in raising awareness and money to fight breast cancer. Try to incorporate one of these community support ideas for breast cancer awareness into your business this month and make it a yearly event.

These bracelets are a great, inexpensive way to raise awareness. You can give them away at your events or include them as a "free gift with purchase."
