The series is set in the year 2035. At this time, the birth rate has dropped dramatically, so schools are being closed down due to the decreased number of students to teach. Morale has also dropped dramatically in the schools. The series follows a group of girls at the all-girl Seioh Private High School.
Manami Amamiya, who goes by the name Manabi, is very active and puts a lot of effort into everything she does. She transfers to Seioh at the beginning of the series, and becomes the student council president. She wants to give everyone a better experience at the school, and comes up with a project that brings the various clubs in the school together. Even though Manabi has a lot of enthusiasm, it turns out that she is incapable of leading even a joint student council meeting.
Mika Inamori, who is also known as Mikan, is a shy and clumsy girl; she's constantly falling down and bumping into things. She is also the secretary for the student council. At first, she's unsure of how to work with Manabi in the council, but over time, Mikan becomes more enthused herself. Mikan also comes across as the most immature member of the group.
Mutsuki Uehara, who is known as Mucchii, is an incredible athlete. She has a tomboyish personality, and she has a short haircut. Mei Etoh is standoffish and stubborn; however, she can also be industrious and competitive.
Momoha Odori, who goes by Momo, is a quiet girl that comes from a rich family. She tends to sleep during class, but is a member of the school's journalism club and broadcast committee. She carries around a digital video recorder and videotapes what goes on around her.
Manabi Straight! utilizes a lot of cute character designs for the main characters. In fact, the character designs are so cute, you think these girls should be junior high students instead of high school students. Content-wise, I didn't think there was anything inappropriate for younger viewers in this series. Personally, I would recommend Manabi Straight! to anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
