Coffee in the News-Summer 2009

Here we are in the dog days of summer and news about coffee still reigns around the world. Here are a few stories that caught my eye this week.

Live Green at Heart-Coffee with a Cause

JaVerde is a coffee company that has a goal of replacing 10,000 damaged or destroyed trees. To ensure meeting this lofty goal, JaVerde has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation donating 5% of their sales to the reforestation of the nation’s forests.

Caribou Coffee Becomes an Official Partner

Caribou Coffee becomes the official coffee of Gopher Athletics at TCF Bank Stadium. Caribou is a Minnesota-based company coupling with a Minnesota-based team.

Laptops Aren't Welcome in Coffee Shops

The tide is turning on the free Wi-Fi phenomena. Café owners are tiring of high electric bills and all-day loiterers that don’t pull their weight when it comes to purchasing coffee and food.

Incentives offered to Green Mountain to Stay

Green Mountain Coffee, a company that is doing well these days, is rumored to be looking for a new location outside of Vermont. It must be more than a rumor because the Vermont Economic Progress Council is said to be offering more than $300,000 in economic incentives.

Coffee, Kites and Rock Bands

Residents of Jakarta, Indonesia, had a chance to enjoy the Coffee Mania Festival. While there were many other activities going on, coffee was indeed the focus with 10 booths serving hot and iced coffee in various blends. "We chose coffee as the main treat in this festival because it's been a part of lifestyle for Jakartans these days," said Andy, an organizer.

Tim Hortons Backs Out of Marriage Event

Tim Hortons, the Canadian coffee franchise that recently invaded New York City, has backed out of the Celebrate Marriage and Family Day in Rhode Island. It seems that Gay activist groups expressed outrage and the event must have been too hot to handle for Tim Hortons.
