Tweeny Witches

Tweeny Witches is a magical girl anime that aired in Japan from April 2004 through March 2005. Tweeny Witches utilizes computer graphics and actors' recording; Tweeny Witches is the first Japanese television animation to have the voice actors' lines recorded before the animation is drawn.

The story starts with the main character, a girl named Arusu (Ellis in the English translation), mysteriously appearing in the world of witches. Arusu is a witchcraft enthusiast; her father (who has mysteriously vanished) gave her a book called the True Magic Book, and taught her that magic should be used for happiness, and never for destruction.

When Arusu enters the witches' world, she is mistaken for a student. Because she interfered with the witch apprentices trying to catch a sprite, Arusu is taken and imprisoned. A young witch named Sheila, who is incredibly stubborn, is put in charge of determining Arusu's punishment. However, after befriending Eva, a young witch assigned to be with Sheila, Eva lets Arusu out of her cage.

Eva attempts to show Arusu how to fly on a broom; in the process, Arusu attempts to escape. As Arusu is flying around on the broom, she manages to release all the sprites the witches use as the source of their magic spells. Eva, along with her classmate Sheila, had spells cast on them to stop their growth; the only way the spell can be broken is for the girls to recapture all the sprites.

Tweeny Witches tells the story of these young girls as they attempt to recapture the sprites. Their adventures end up taking them into the wizard world. The three girls learn valuable lessons about friendship and trust. And over the course of the series, Arusu learns some surprising things about her family (especially in regards to her father and why he disappeared). And by the end of the series, Arusu also learns more about the True Magic Book and why her father gave it to her.

It feels like Tweeny Witches is an attempt to make an anime property that bears some resemblance to the Harry Potter franchise. The main differences are that this is a female-based property and focuses heavily on witches, and there really isn't an equivalent to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

Personally, I would recommend Tweeny Witches to anime viewers who are 12 or 13 years of age and older.
