Metal Gear Solid 4 Online Walkthrough
Character Creation

There are a few things to note about character creation. First, you only get one free character slot, and that stores all the data you acquire while playing that character. Stats, rankings, and even friend lists are all stored in a character. For this reason, it's very important that you choose exactly what you want at the beginning. It's possible to delete a character, but you have to wait a week after creating it to do so. Furthermore, you can buy extra character slots, but at $7 per slot they're not cheap.

Voices and faces are things that absolutely cannot be changed. When picking a voice, remember to go through a large amount of the sample messages to get a feel for it. Some of the voices have distinct personalities to them (there's one voice that's kind of a jerk as far as phrasing of messages go) so don't get stuck with one you won't like later.

Clothes, on the other hand, can be changed, but at the current time this actually only means "taking them off". So, like voice and face, you're going to be pretty much stuck with whatever you pick. However, you can pick, say, a helmet and a balaclava, and take off the helmet, if you so desire. Basically, you just can't get new clothes right now. The specific clothes have no effect on gameplay, except perhaps to make you slightly more or less visible. Coloration of clothing is sort of important to serve as a minimal camouflage. Proper clothing will help you blend in with different environments. Desert maps like "Midtown Madness" and "Blood Bath" are easier with khaki or tan clothing. Black clothing is good for hiding in shadows, a necessity for close-range urban combat; however, they also highlight you against the sky if you choose to be a sniper. Green clothes help in grassy areas, but there are only a few of those in the current set of maps (there's one area in "Urban Ultimatum", but that's really about it).
