Metal Gear Solid 4 Online Walkthrough Tactics When moving, try to stay in a formation where everyone is looking in a different direction. Cover as many angles as you can; walk with the L1 button pushed so that you can move while still aiming in a direction. When walking out in the open, form a "diamond" with one person looking forward, one person looking right, one person looking left, and one person looking back. When moving along a wall, the principle is the same, but you have one less direction to cover. Instead, move in a line formation - one person looking in front, two people looking to the front-side and back-side, and one person looking behind the group. Use the map to make sure everyone's staying in formation and to follow your leader. If you see an enemy or hear gunfire from a teammate, communicate as much as possible and descend on your enemy, then move back into formation. When moving in formation, your group is vulnerable to grenades, but since you're covering every angle, you shouldn't get surprised by them. Call out if you see one incoming and then dive away from it. No formation will make you invulnerable, but if you can coordinate your efforts you can reduce the likelihood that you'll be snuck up on. If you're advancing with a group (specifically for forward movement), it is a good tactic to use "bounding overwatch". Divide your unit into two teams. Have one team (Team A) move forward while the other team (Team B) watches ahead and engages any enemies in front of them. When Team A reaches its destination, they stop and aim their guns forward. Then Team B now moves forward, past Team A, and takes up another destination. Then Team A moves forward, and so on. It's like a game of leapfrog. When you're moving into a building that may be occupied by the enemy, there are a couple things you can do to make things safer. First, throw a stun grenade through the door to blind any enemies inside. Next, a soldier armed with a shield should move in first, crouch-walking with the shield held out in front of him. He should move slightly forward of the door to block enemies shooting at the doorway, and your other teammates should move in behind him and fan out to the right and left of him. If you've got no shield-bearing soldier, then a shotgun-armed soldier should go first to take out any enemies immediately next to the door. ENVGs are also a good thing for the first soldier to have so he can quickly identify and deal with enemies before the surprise wears off. A proper entry should be fast, coordinated, and well-timed.
