Doorstep Lament

Gemma Meek

How can you not care?
For hours I sat in the rain
with a cheap bottle of wine for company.

I couldnīt drown my sorrows.
Every minute a thump in my
stomach reminded me of your cruelty.

I watched a spider crawling
unsteady steps down the wall.
Raindrops fell as I beseeched you quietly.

Are you ever coming back?
The thought confused me momentarily
and I wondered if you were ever there at all.
